Know Where to Go for Care

The Pulse, May 2021

If you’re not experiencing a life-threatening emergency and need care, it’s good to know your options. Understanding where to go can save you hundreds of dollars and hours of your time.

Try Virtual First

A great first defense in non-emergency situations is to use virtual health. Each TRS health plan gives you access to TRS Virtual Health. Depending on your plan, the provider will be different. But each plan has a 24/7 option, so no matter what time of day, you can rely on their service.

Find your virtual health provider:

If you’re a TRS-ActiveCare or TRS-Care Standard participant, Personal Health Guides (PHGs) from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) are a great resource. Available 24/7, PHGs can help you identify the type of place to visit and look up the nearest facility for you.

You can reach a PHG at any time at 1-866-355-5999.

Know Your Options

Get familiar with the in-network urgent care centers, walk-in clinics and hospitals in your neighborhood before you need them.

  • Urgent care centers have convenient extended hours and you don’t need an appointment. Urgent care centers offer care for serious, non-life threatening, medical matters but can treat many other conditions like fractures, minor lacerations, infections, sports injuries, bronchitis, and more.
  • For minor problems, like a sore throat or a minor injury, walk-in clinics are another convenient option that will cost you less. They have convenient, extended hours and you don’t need an appointment.

Locate an In-Network Facility

If you do need to visit an urgent care, walk-in clinic or ER, it’s best to make sure it’s in-network first. To stay one step ahead, get familiar with your in-network options before an emergency.
