Processing Time Frames

​​​This notice is primarily intended to provide TRS members or beneficiaries with information about processing time frames for any benefit for which they have applied.

Note: Non-routine accounts such as an account involving a divorce, multiple employers, service credit purchase, or other extenuating circumstances may take longer to process.

Benefit Type Estimated Processing Time Frames

Death Benefits

Within 31 days after all required forms and documents are received.

Disability Retirement

Within 31 days after all required forms and documents have been received.

Estimates for Retirement

Within 31 days of receipt of request.

Retirement Benefits

Within 31​​ days after all required forms, documents, and payments (if applicable) have been received.

Refunds

Within 31 days after all required forms, documents, contributions are received, and final deposit is posted to the member’s account.

Service Credit Purchase

Within 45 days of receipt of request.

Direct Deposit Updates

Within 31 days of receipt of request.

Income Tax Withholding Updates

Within 31 days of receipt of request.

 

Death Benefits

Once a death is reported a notification letter will be sent to the beneficiary on record.

Most benefits are processed within 31 days from the date TRS receives the following information:

Retired Member Deaths:

  • Copy of the death certificate
  • Properly completed death claim form(s)

Active Member Deaths:

  • ​TRS will request information from the member’s last employer(s)
  • Copy of the death certificate
  • Properly completed death claim form(s)

Retirement Benefits

Most retirement benefits are processed within 45 days after TRS receives all required information including:

  • Properly completed application(s) and required forms
  • ​TRS will contact your employer(s) near your retirement date to confirm your termination date and final salary information

If you terminate employment in May and receive your final pay in August (balance of contract payments throughout the summer months), you will likely receive your first retirement benefit payment in October.

Examples for most public-school employees

You terminate May 31

Employer pays you off in June

Employer provides final information to TRS in July*

You will receive your first annuity payment representing June and July in early to mid-August.

You terminate May 31

Employer pays you through August

Employer provides final information to TRS in September

You will receive your first annuity payment for June through August in October

*Termination and salary information will be provided by your employer after your final paycheck is processed.
