FAQs: TRS-ERS Transfer

If your ERS service credit is at least five months in one fiscal year (September 1 through August 31), it is eligible for transfer to TRS as one creditable year of service.

Yes, but you must have one full calendar month break in service after your retirement date during which time you do not work at all for any TRS- or ERS- covered employer. You will also be required to make contributions to a new TRS account.

As an ERS retiree, once you meet the break in service requirement (one full month), you may return to TRS-covered employment as an active TRS member and begin a new member contribution account. You must pay TRS deposits and will be entitled to the same benefits as any other active TRS member.

Simultaneous service under TRS and ERS may not be transferred or combined. You are eligible for benefits from each system separately, based on the laws and rules of each system.

ERS Group 4 Retirement Benefit Plan

ERS Group 4 Retirement Benefit Plan for State Employees Hired on or after Sept. 1, 2022

The ERS Group 4 cash balance retirement benefit is for state employees hired on or after Sept. 1, 2022.

This ERS retirement plan may limit the ability of some TRS members to transfer service between retirement systems.

Employees who fall under the ERS Group 4 plan are not eligible to transfer ERS service to TRS or TRS service to ERS. ERS Group 4 plan members can only use their ERS service credit with the Proportionate Retirement Program. See the TRS Benefits Handbook or the Proportionate Retirement webpage for more information.

In addition, if you previously worked for an ERS-covered employer, withdrew your ERS account, and were not an ERS member as of Aug. 31, 2022, you will not be able to repurchase your ERS service for the purposes of transferring that service to TRS.

Group 1, 2, and 3 plan members can continue to transfer service between ERS and TRS.

TRS is not able to answer questions regarding your ERS group membership status. You will need to contact ERS directly regarding any questions.
