Thinking About Leaving TRS-Care? Here are Some Things to Consider

The Pulse, October 2021

Medicare open enrollment started Oct. 15, and we know you’re receiving a significant amount of mail offering other health plans outside TRS. Navigating through your options can be overwhelming, but TRS is here to help you make an informed decision about your health plan.

Medicare’s open enrollment period is Oct. 15 – Dec. 7, 2021.

Care You Can Count On

Comparing TRS-Care to individual Medicare plans?

Use the TRS-Care Medicare checklist to make an informed decision on your health plan options.

Although the monthly premium for the TRS-Care Medicare Advantage plan and Medicare Rx plan may be higher than other plans available on the individual market, paying a higher amount up-front means you may have more manageable and predictable costs.

The TRS-Care Medicare Plans Offer Rich Benefits with No Gaps in Coverage

Most Medicare Part D plans include a coverage gap. That means when a participant’s pharmacy claims reach a certain dollar level, the member must pay a larger percentage of the cost of specialty and brand-name drugs for a period of time.

TRS-Care Medicare Rx® does NOT have a coverage gap.

You pay the same low copays when you reach the coverage gap stage, so you never experience the “donut hole.” On many private plans, you pay 25% of the drug’s total cost in the coverage gap phase. Costs decrease after that when you reach the catastrophic coverage stage.

TRS-Care Medicare Advantage also offers the flexibility of out-of-network medical coverage so you can see any provider who accepts Medicare and is willing to bill UnitedHealthcare.

Many plans outside TRS-Care offer only limited network plans to keep their costs lower.

Make an Informed Decision

If you or your spouse have Medicare and are considering other health plans outside TRS, use this checklist to help you make an informed decision about whether or not to stay with TRS-Care.

The checklist provides questions to ask when comparing the TRS-Care Medicare Advantage and Medicare Rx plans with other plans outside TRS. If you have a Medicare agent, be sure to talk with them about the items on this list.

The TRS-Care Medicare Advantage and TRS-Care Medicare Rx plans are designed to give you comprehensive medical coverage when you need care. With TRS-Care, you may pay more in monthly premiums, but you’ll likely avoid costly surprises throughout the year.

When evaluating your health plan options, look beyond monthly premiums (pdf) and consider all key out-of-pocket costs, including doctor copays, inpatient hospital stay copays, and maximum out-of-pocket amounts.

If a plan sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be wary of agents who offer you plans with unusually low premiums and deductibles – the costs will have to come out somewhere so it’s important to compare all the details.

If you terminate TRS-Care coverage, you can only return if you experience a special enrollment event such as a marriage.
