You don’t always have to be sick to go to the doctor. Being proactive and getting preventive screenings and annual wellness exams can help diagnose serious illnesses early and improve your health.
What is Preventive Care?
It's important for every member of your family to keep up with their preventive care. Your TRS-ActiveCare plan covers 100% of in-network preventive care with no copay or deductible. Preventive care and screenings include:
- well-woman exam
- mammogram
- colonoscopy
- prostate exam
- mental health screenings
- routine immunizations

1. Annual wellness exams help prevent sickness.
Your doctor can assess your health yearly to help identify potential risks and create health goals. During your wellness exam, your doctor will:
- talk about your general health, medications and family health history
- perform a physical exam
- recommend routine screenings and immunizations based on medical history, gender and age
- answer your health questions
2. A relationship with a Primary Care Provider (PCP) can lead to a healthier life.
3. Vaccines can give your immune system a boost.
Your PCP will recommend appropriate vaccines for your age, medical history and lifestyle. Keeping up to date helps you:
- protect yourself and others from getting and spreading certain illnesses and diseases
- lower your risk for serious infections if you have a chronic condition
- avoid diseases you're at higher risk for as you age, like shingles
Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to learn more about immunization recommendations and schedules.
4. Increase the chances of detecting serious illnesses early.
Regular screening for things like diabetes, cancer and depression make it more likely to catch illnesses in the early stages. In many cases, early detection can prevent complications and can even be lifesaving. Once your doctor knows the diagnosis, they can help you manage it. Your doctor can also refer you to a specialist if needed.
5. It’s covered by your TRS health plan.
The best part is your health plan covers screenings and services with no out-of-pocket costs like copays or coinsurance when you visit in-network doctors. This is true even if you haven't met your deductible.
For more details on what preventive services are covered at no cost to you, refer to Covered Preventive Care Services*, or see your benefit materials.
Tip: When you make your appointment and check in, be sure to let the scheduler know your visit should be coded as preventive care. If you're getting other services because of an ongoing condition or diagnostic care, they won't qualify as preventive care services, and you'll be responsible for out-of-pocket costs.

Annual Care
What's the difference between your annual physical and wellness visit?
An annual physical exam includes a head-to-toe exam. This visit is a good time to review your medications and/or health concerns. Your plan covers this visit once per calendar year.
A wellness visit includes a blood pressure check, height and weight measurement and body mass index (BMI) test. Your plan covers this visit once per calendar year.
You may also ask your PCP to combine your annual physical and wellness visits into one convenient annual care appointment.
You may also be eligible to earn a $25 reward for completing your Annual Wellness visit. Register or sign into your plan website at retiree.uhc.com/TRS-CareMA to learn more about the rewards you can earn.
