TRS Named 2016 Top Workplace in Austin

For the fifth year in a row and sixth year overall, TRS has been recognized by its employees as a top workplace in Central Texas! Executive Director Brian Guthrie said, “We continue to be honored to receive this award, particularly since the judges are our employees.” TRS is proud to be one of the 15 employers in the large company category (500 or more employees), ranking amongst other tech, financial, and business services who also consistently make the list.

Workplace Dynamics, LLC, a leading research firm that specializes in organizational health and workplace improvement, administered the anonymous feedback survey to TRS and 160 other Austin-area companies. According to Workplace Dynamics CEO Doug Claffey, “[To] be a Top Workplace, organizations must meet our strict standards for organizational health. And who better to ask about work life than the people who live the culture every day – the employees. Time and time again, our research has proven that what’s most important to them is a strong belief in where the organization is headed, how it’s going to get there, and the feeling that everyone is in it together. Without this sense of connection, an organization doesn’t have a shot at being named a Top Workplace.

The survey measures employee opinions in four general areas: Alignment, Effectiveness, Connection, and Management. Employees rated TRS on specific issues such as leadership and direction, values and ethics, communications, career opportunities, and how well they are treated. The results are then analyzed to narrow the list down to those employers that excel in leadership, vision, and culture.

Employees were able to provide comments and improvement ideas. TRS comments included, “I have great co-workers who share my enthusiasm to provide great service to our members,” “I get to do what I love while serving a higher purpose,” and “Our mission is to provide teachers with the retirement income they so richly deserve. We do our jobs exceptionally well to serve the teachers of Texas.”

Employees were invited to provide specific input and suggestions in order to improve or build upon organizational excellence. The chief officers and their management team then carefully reviewed the survey results and additional feedback in order to develop action plans to attract, retain, and develop highly skilled and talented employees.
