Make Your Health Plan Work for You

The Pulse, May 2021

Health insurance can be confusing! There are so many terms and details that it can feel overwhelming. But you don’t have to go through it alone. Your TRS health plans include customer service to help navigate your plan and care.

TRS-ActiveCare and TRS-Care Standard

TRS-ActiveCare and TRS-Care Standard have 24/7 customer service through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas’ (BCBSTX) Personal Health Guides (PHGs). PHGs are trained to be experts on your health plan. Think of them as your concierge for your health care plan. And they’re available to you at any time, on any day.

What Can a PHG Do for You?

Ask a PHG for help with things like:

Administrative tasks. A PHG can order new ID cards, check the status of a claim, or send you an Explanation of Benefits and more.

Finding an in-network provider. A PHG can help you find a Primary Care Provider or a specialist based on your needs, preferences, and health plan requirements. They can also help you with Provider Finder if you’re having trouble on your own. A PHG can even schedule appointments for you.

Cost Estimates. A PHG can let you know what to expect to pay for in-network services and procedures so that you can plan accordingly. They can also help you with the Cost Estimator tool on the BCBSTX website.

Prior authorization. Some medical services require preauthorization, which means you need approval before the service takes place. A PHG can coordinate the preauthorization, so you’ll have one less thing to worry about.

Help with health and wellness tools and resources. A PHG can help you register for and set up any of the tools that come with your health plan, like Blue Access for MembersSM, the BCBSTX App, and Well onTarget®. They can even remind you to take advantage of benefits you may not be aware of.

Mental health benefits. Mental Health PHGs are specifically trained in mental health benefits and can help you choose the correct mental health provider or facility for your needs. They’ll connect you with a Behavioral Health Case Manager if your case is complicated or advanced.

These PHGs can even recognize if you need immediate help and if so, will direct you to our internal crisis line. To connect with a Mental Health PHG, mention mental or behavioral health as the reason for your call.

How Can You Reach a PHG?

Call a PHG at 1-866-355-5999, or chat with a PHG through the BCBSTX App. Download the BCBSTX App from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
