A Commitment to You

TRS was constitutionally created in 1937 and has nearly 90 years of experience providing retirement benefits to you: the public education employees and retirees of Texas. When it comes to your TRS benefits, here are some certainties you can count on:

  • TRS provides a consistent retirement benefit and is committed to ensuring the safe payment of your annuity.
  • Your annuity and beneficiary benefit payments are established by state law. Learn more on the Understand Your Benefits page.
  • Fluctuations in the market have never lowered your established, gross annuity payment (per TRS history to date). TRS is in the forever business and invests for the long-term to help fund your benefits. Positive and negative return years are recognized over time to ensure the stability of the pension fund. In this way, the TRS plan is designed to better handle volatility.
  • The actuarial soundness or unsoundness of your pension trust fund (per state statute) does not lower your established, gross annuity payment. An external actuary annually assesses the health of the fund, and this information is shared publicly with members, state leaders, and other interested parties to help ensure the long-term stability of the fund.
  • As a TRS member, you are part of one of the nation’s largest public pension systems with dedicated investment professionals committed to serving you through investing for the long term.
  • TRS also offers comprehensive medical and pharmacy plans for eligible members. TRS-ActiveCare is designed for active public education employers to offer their public education employees and our TRS-Care plans are for eligible public education retirees.
