May 13, 2016: New TRS Trustees Appointed

GOV. ABBOTT APPOINTS JOHN ELLIOTT AND GREG GIBSON AND REAPPOINTS CHRISTOPHER MOSS TO THE TRS BOARD OF TRUSTEES

AUSTIN – Two new trustees were sworn in today as members of the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) Board of Trustees at the board’s May meeting in Austin. The trustees, John Elliott of Austin and Dr. Greg Gibson of Schertz, were appointed to the board this week by Gov. Greg Abbott. The governor also reappointed Christopher Moss of Lufkin to a second term on the board.

Elliott is a partner in the Austin law firm Smith, Robertson, Elliott & Douglas, L.L.P. He is a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of Texas, Austin Bar Association, International Council of Shopping Centers, Urban Land Institute, and the Real Estate Council of Austin. Elliott received a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from the University of Texas at Austin and a juris doctor degree from The University of Texas School of Law.

Gibson is superintendent of Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District. He has previously served as a truancy officer, bus driver, teacher, assistant principal, principal, curriculum director, and assistant superintendent in Texas public schools. He is a member of the Texas Association of School Administrators and National Baldrige Award Panel of Judges. Additionally, he is a board member and examiner for the Quality Texas Foundation. Gibson received a bachelor of science degree and a master of arts in education degree from Midwestern State University as well as a Doctor of Education degree from the University of North Texas.

Moss was first appointed to the board by Gov. Rick Perry in 2010. He is president of Allendale, Inc. DBA The Advanced Financial Group. He is a registered representative of Woodlands Securities Corporation, member FINRA and SIPC, and an investment advisory agent of Woodlands Asset Management Inc. He is a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, board member of the Angelina County Fair, a committee member of Angelina County Go Texan, board member of the Volunteer Services Council-Lufkin State Supported Living Center, was the 2014 recipient of the Jack O. “Butch” McMullen, Jr. Silver Spike Award for distinguished community service, and a past president of the Lufkin Host Lions Club. Moss received a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University and earned a master’s degree in Business Administration from Sam Houston State University.

The appointees will serve terms set to expire Aug. 31, 2021.

The Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) is one of the largest retirement systems in the nation. The system's core mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of Texas educators by prudently investing and managing trust assets and delivering member benefits. As of August 31, 2024, TRS pension fund had a market value of $209.5 billion.
