FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 13, 2023

Teacher Retirement System Wins 12th Top Workplace Award

Agency’s Executive Director Also Honored with Specialty Leadership Award

AUSTIN – For the twelfth time, the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) is being recognized as a Top Workplace in the annual Austin rankings appearing in the Austin American-Statesman.

TRS ranked fourth place among large companies and is the only state government employer in the top 13 large employers on this year’s list. The Top Workplaces Program recognizes employers as nominated and informed by feedback from employees.

Additionally, this year, TRS Executive Director Brian Guthrie was honored with a Specialty Award recognizing his leadership in the large employer category based on employee feedback.

“It is truly a privilege to lead a dedicated team of member-focused professionals at TRS who strive to serve public education employees every day,” Guthrie said. “As our agency responds to the needs of our growing membership, we are committed to fostering a positive work environment centered around our mission and core values.”

Guthrie pointed out that attracting and retaining the best employees are top priorities in alignment with the agency’s mission. For example, to maintain healthy staffing levels in the agency’s member counseling phone center, TRS offers these employees the ability to work remotely from anywhere in Texas. TRS is also successfully operating its first regional office that serves members in the El Paso region.

TRS of Texas, established in 1937, employs more than a thousand people and is responsible for managing retirement and health benefits for more than 1.9 million active and retired participants and their beneficiaries. It is the sixth largest U.S. public pension fund by assets under management. As of 8/31/2023, the TRS pension fund had a market value of $186.6 billion.

TRS’ biennial Value Brochure notes one in 20 Texans is a member of TRS and the system has ongoing economic value to all Texans. Most TRS retirees remain in the state and spend their annuity checks here.
