Beware of Online ClickFix Scams

June 2025

ClickFix is a sneaky online trick that fools people into accidentally installing harmful software on their computers — and it only takes a few clicks.

Imagine you're visiting a website and messages pop up saying:

“Please prove you're human. Press these keys: Windows + R, then Ctrl + V, then Enter.”

It might look like a normal security check, like a CAPTCHA. But here’s the catch:

  • Windows + R opens a special box on your computer that lets you run commands.
  • Ctrl + V pastes something into that box — something you didn’t see.
  • Enter runs it.

What you just ran could secretly download a virus or give a hacker access to your computer.

To defend against ClickFix:

  • Never follow strange instructions from websites that ask you to press keys or run commands.
  • If something feels off, close the page and don’t interact with it.
  • Keep your antivirus and browser up to date.
