Important Update on Blood Glucose Meters

The Pulse
October 2025

Starting Jan. 1, 2026, Evernorth’s pharmacy benefit services, Express Scripts, will no longer cover One Touch diabetic supplies. Participants who have recently filled a prescription for One Touch diabetic supplies that may be affected will receive a letter in the mail notifying the change in benefits and will provide Express Scripts preferred alternatives.

diabetes glucose monitor

TRS-ActiveCare and TRS-Care Standard cover select preferred blood glucose meters at no cost to you through your prescription benefits with Express Scripts.

Because blood glucose monitors are not compatible with other manufacturer test strips, changing monitors or test strips will require you to change both supplies

What Are the Supplies?

  • Blood Glucose Monitor – medical device used to measure the amount of glucose (sugar) in a small sample of blood.
  • Blood Glucose Test Strips (or Test Strips) – small thin strip you apply a small sample of blood for your blood glucose meter to measure the amount of glucose in your blood. These are not compatible and usually only work with the monitor it’s designed for.
  • Lancets – small, disposable sterile needles used to obtain a small drop of blood for measuring blood glucose levels.
  • Lancing Device – small, pen-like tool that holds a lancet to create a tiny puncture in the skin to obtain a drop of blood for testing with a blood glucose meter.

Blood Glucose monitors are usually provided in a “kit,” that often comes with the monitor, lancing device and a small supply of test strips and lancets to get started

How Do I Obtain?

  • Ask your doctor to write you a prescription for a meter, test strips and lancets.
    • Preferred glucose meters are covered at no cost to you under the prescription plan benefits.
    • Filling your test strips and lancets can save you money by filling a 90-days’ supply at participating in-network Retail Maintenance Pharmacy or Express Scripts Home delivery.
