If you're considering retirement within the next 12 months, requesting a formal estimate of your retirement benefits is one of the first steps you need to take to formally begin the retirement process.
How to Request a Formal Estimate
Please log in to the MyTRS online member portal and visit Request an Estimate under the Planning Tools tab. Once you submit your request, TRS will review your account and mail you a retirement packet. The packet will include retirement estimates and the forms needed to apply for retirement. Normally, you will receive your retirement packet within 60 days, but it can take longer during high volume periods when many members are requesting packets.
Things to keep in mind when requesting an estimate:
- Only one estimate request per Benefit Type (e.g., service retirement or disability retirement) is allowed per fiscal year.
- Within your request, you may list up to two retirement dates for which you would like to receive estimates.
- Retirement dates for which you would like to receive estimates can be for the current fiscal year or the following fiscal year.
MyTRS Benefit Calculator
You can always create your own estimate of retirement benefits by using the Benefit Calculator available in the MyTRS online member portal. If you do not plan to retire in the current school year or the following school year, the Benefit Calculator is your best tool for estimating future benefits.
