Benefit Calculator Instructions

Use this calculator to estimate your potential service retirement, disability retirement, or active member death benefits.

Log in to the MyTRS member portal, and select the Benefit Calculator located under the Planning Tools tab. The calculator will automatically import current data from your TRS records such as your tier, years of service credit, and highest annual salaries. Change the data if you want to explore different scenarios.

Steps for Using the Benefit Calculator

  1. Select Your Benefit Type

    Benefit Type – The Benefit Calculator allows you to run estimates for service retirement, disability retirement, and active member death benefits.

  2. Enter Basic Information

    Retirement Date If you are running a service or disability retirement estimate, you will select your desired retirement date. 
    Note: All TRS retirements are effective on the last day of the month.

    Death Date An active member death estimate can be run if you would like to see the benefits available if you were to die while working for a TRS-covered employer. In the calculator, you will select a death date.

    Beneficiary Information Enter the data for your proposed beneficiary. This can be the same beneficiary that you currently have on file, or it can be someone else.
    Note: This is not an official designation of beneficiary. If you wish to change your beneficiary, please print, complete, and mail to TRS a form TRS 15, Designation of Beneficiary (pdf).

  3. Review Service Credit and Highest Annual Salaries

    Years of Service Credit This field shows the current service credit that you have. You can change this amount if you plan to work longer.

    Highest Annual Salaries These salaries represent the highest salaries reported to TRS. You can change the amounts if you plan to work longer or know you will be earning a higher salary in the future.

  4. View Calculation Results

    This step will show the retirement or active member death benefits available based on the information provided in the previous steps.

    If you would like to make a correction to any of the data, click the Back button at the bottom of the page.

    If you would like to save the estimate, click Save. This will allow you to review the estimate in the future.
